Intro to Borsao Seleccion Tinto Grenache – Borsao Seleccion Tinto from Campo de Borja, Borsao’s star wine is a careful blend of Tempranillo, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes making a robust characterful wine tasting of berries, cherries and spice. Full tasting note and wine making – Borsao Seleccion Tinto from Campo de Borja has rich, plum and red berry fruit with a touch of white pepper on the nose. A nicely balanced yet concentrated red fruit mix with darker spice and chocolate notes to give weight and texture to the palate. Plump ripe tannins and pepper from the Syrah add some grip to this juicy and approachable red and the vines are all for 15 to 30 year old vines. The grape varieties are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks with 15 days of maceration on the skins to extract colour and flavour. The producer – Bodegas Borsao was established in 1959. In 2001 it joined with two other of the most progressive, co-operative, cellars in the Campo de Borja region to form a limited company. In the Campo de Borja zone east of Rioja, Borsao sources grapes from over 700 member growers covering 2,400 hectares from vineyards foothills of the Moncayo mountain. The climate is arid, with hot dry days, and cool nights – which allow optimum acidity levels to be maintained within the grapes. Grenache and Macabeo grapes thrive in these conditions and represents more than 80% of total production. Borsao has access to a large selection of vineyard plots at different altitudes, and hence to a wide range of great quality grapes. They are recognised for their entry level varietals – as outstanding examples of easy-to-drink inexpensive wines – as they are for their premium wines, in particular the iconic, multi award winning Tres Picos.
