Altos Las Hormigas’ Colonia Las Liebres Bonarda comes from the eastern side of Mendoza, where the climate is warm but moderated by altitude and steady Andean airflow. The project began as part of the estate’s push to champion Bonarda as a serious Argentine variety, working with older vineyards on deep, alluvial soils laid down by ancient river systems. These soils are mostly sand, silt, and gravel with good drainage, which keeps vine vigour in check and helps the fruit ripen cleanly at moderate alcohol levels. The geology and geography shape the style: warm days build flavour, cool nights preserve acidity, and the free‑draining soils keep the wine light on its feet. The team farms organically and ferments with minimal intervention, aiming for purity rather than weight. The wine is bright and juicy, showing red and black cherry, a touch of spice, and soft tannins. It stays fresh and dry, with a clean finish that reflects both the grape and the vineyard’s sandy, alluvial character.
