Blank Bottle is the project of Pieter Walser, based in Somerset West on the edge of South Africa’s coastal region. The vineyards he works with stretch across the Western Cape—Stellenbosch, Swartland, Wellington, Elgin, and beyond—each chosen for specific soils, altitude, and exposure rather than for prestige. His approach is deliberately unconventional: no fixed varieties, no set blends, and no marketing‑led decisions. Every wine is made in response to the vineyard and the season. Fermentations are typically spontaneous, oak is used sparingly and for texture rather than flavour, and additions are kept to a minimum. The result is a constantly shifting range of small‑batch wines that reflect place, vintage, and Walser’s instinctive style. 100% Malbec. Dark chocolate dipped oranges, with some minty notes, violets and a sweet perfume akin to opening a box of chocolates on the nose. Medium-full bodied, and very much so showing the softer, prettier side of Malbec, with gentle tannins, good freshness, and a lovely rounded mouthfeel.
