Intro to Chateau Garraud, Lalande de Pomerol – Chateau Garraud, Lalande de Pomerol has aromas of ripe dark fruit and oak on the nose that are followed by rich, intensely ripe, plummy fruit on the palate balanced by acidity and tannins. Full tasting note and wine making – The vines are planted on pure gravel and deep clay and the yields at Château Garraud are limited by Double Guyot pruning as well as bud removal. Leaf removal and crop thinning are carried out too when necessary. Harvest is by hand. On arrival at the winery the grapes are sorted and vinification is in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. Fermentation is followed by a long maceration and 80% of the wine is then matured for twelve months in air conditioned cellars in French oak barrels. All in all a great example of how Merlot excels in Lalande de Pomerol. The producer – The vineyard of Château Garraud is located on a variety of rich terroirs: gravel, clay-gravel, deep clay with ‘crasse de fer’ and clay-sand, high on the Pomerol plateau. The Château Garraud vineyard was planted in the early middle of the 19th century by the Count de Kermartin. Léon Nony purchased it at the end of the 1930’s and proceeded to renovate and extend it. Drink with – A perfect partner for rustic French dishes such as beef Bourguignonne.
